The Spoon-Eared ChildA new drawing, drawn in snatches, in between many other busy-nesses ~ one bit one day sat in town and the next bit another day some weeks later sat at home by the fire. It is finally sort of finished and I think I like it, but don't know if I should paint it or leave it as a drawing. Any thoughts?

It is absolutely lovely just as it is. But me being a colorfull kind of girl...I can just imagine that beautiful little baby quilt lit up with colors. It will be amazing either way, Rima, your work always is!
ReplyDeleteI second Amy's comment regarding giving the quilt a bit of color...maybe muted, but a variety of color.
ReplyDeleteThe other thing maybe you might consider is the inside of the ears. Perhaps a slight bit of color there.

It is very expressive. I do not think color would add much..it is beautiful!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm with nina on this one...let it sit for a bit and see if it calls out for color or not...in my experience, the work usually will tell you when it's done...or not!

ReplyDeleteI think one can see the "bones" and even the feeling so well with this as is, Also I think there is something about the subject, something questioning,immanent, and unknown, which might be lost in finishing it, thereby removing some of the ambiguity (what sort of creature? what sort of nurturer?).

I suspect that, like most work, the sketch itself will dictate the outcome. Either way, you have many admirers.

Ask the baby, he'll tell you. It may take him a couple of days, but he'll let you know.

ReplyDeleteAnd please consider, please please consider (repeated for emphasis) writing up the story as a tale, and illustrating that, and other of your tales, in a story book?
Please. As either a smart fine book publisher will give you barrels of money to publish it which would give all of us joy at seeing your good fortune or you can have them printed by yourself (via miracles of the age) and sell them at a modest price to great numbers and thereby arrive at the same good result.
Looks finished to me. I would say if you wanted to do anything more to it, just ink it in, but no colour. It looks great in the soft greys.

ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful the way it is, the spoon ears really stand out in b/w and the image is really poetic. You could experment with colour if you wanted though, perhaps try printing the drawing out and then colour in the print so you've still got the original in b/w? Best wishes.

I really love old prams! It's one of my favorite things when I visit museums and such. Those spoon ears remind me of the little ear scoops that people used, only with the idea the wrong way round! I'd like to see it in colour too, but then I would, wouldn't I? hehe x

ReplyDeleteI love this drawing, I've also made a pram very similar to this, complete with baby, and with tiny quilt!It's a little rickety yet, and unpainted, papier mache gets a little difficult to fashion into wheels, axis etc!
