The Spoon-Eared Child

The Spoon-Eared Child

A new drawing, drawn in snatches, in between many other busy-nesses ~ one bit one day sat in town and the next bit another day some weeks later sat at home by the fire. It is finally sort of finished and I think I like it, but don't know if I should paint it or leave it as a drawing. Any thoughts?

  1. It is absolutely lovely just as it is. But me being a colorfull kind of girl...I can just imagine that beautiful little baby quilt lit up with colors. It will be amazing either way, Rima, your work always is!

  2. I second Amy's comment regarding giving the quilt a bit of color...maybe muted, but a variety of color.

The other thing maybe you might consider is the inside of the ears. Perhaps a slight bit of color there.

I love all your work color or not.

  8. This is wonderful Rima! How do you think them up!
I'm going to sit on the fence and say you are wonderful either way! No matter whether it's a drawing or a painting, you can't go wrong in my book. :-)

  9. It looks finished to me. I vote to leave it as a drawing.

I love the things that come out of your imagination.

  10. Lovely! I would keep it just the way it is but just because I love so much your drawings.

  11. I'm with nina on this one...let it sit for a bit and see if it calls out for color or not...in my experience, the work usually will tell you when it's done...or not!

  12. Amazingly strange and wonderful - just as is.

  13. I think one can see the "bones" and even the feeling so well with this as is, Also I think there is something about the subject, something questioning, immanent, and unknown, which might be lost in finishing it, thereby removing some of the ambiguity (what sort of creature? what sort of nurturer?).

  14. It's really enchanted just as it is.

I don't think I would to a thing, other than hang it up!

  15. It's so special and amazing just as it is.....

but if you decide to add color, I'm sure I'll be astonished and say it was absolutely the right thing to do!

  16. leave it like it is... it's perfect

  17. turn your "spoons" inward...
then listen to find the answer!
    it will come to you....

  18. I suspect that, like most work, the sketch itself will dictate the outcome. Either way, you have many admirers.
I'm intrigued about a child with spoon ears;is there a tale to this?

  19. Ask the baby, he'll tell you. It may take him a couple of days, but he'll let you know.
For myself, I love it as it is, but would love to see what colours you would choose.

  20. Gorgeous either way, Rima. Can you perhaps draw it again on wood to paint?

And please consider, please please consider (repeated for emphasis) writing up the story as a tale, and illustrating that, and other of your tales, in a story book?

Please. As either a smart fine book publisher will give you barrels of money to publish it which would give all of us joy at seeing your good fortune or you can have them printed by yourself (via miracles of the age) and sell them at a modest price to great numbers and thereby arrive at the same good result.

  21. Looks finished to me. I would say if you wanted to do anything more to it, just ink it in, but no colour. It looks great in the soft greys.

  22. It's beautiful the way it is, the spoon ears really stand out in b/w and the image is really poetic. You could experment with colour if you wanted though, perhaps try printing the drawing out and then colour in the print so you've still got the original in b/w? Best wishes.

  26. I love it just as it is, but agree with the person who suggested writing up and illustrating the whole story. It looks so poignant and beautiful.

  27. Oh my goodness, I am so happy to have found you. What I have seen on this page of your blog touches my heart. I find your work to be full of wonder, whimsy and charm - amazing talent too! I look forward to a leisurely stroll with a cup of tea. I plan to be back again and again.

  28. Yes I'd like to hear the tale of the Spoon-Eared Child too and can imagine the quilt in greens and browns if you were to add some colour but it's wonderfully touching as it is*!*

  29. Magical rima, tho' i just love how you paint your drawings, the way you manage to make them irridescent almost... wonderful!!

  30. Just re-read that note above.... I meant of course 'almost irridescent' NOT almost wonderful! :)

  31. The sketch is lovely and imaginative, as always. But now that I have seen it, I am curious to see what you would do with colour. I'm sure you would make it better in some way even if it's already perfect! :)

  32. I like it just the way it is! :)

  33. Hey Rima,

Could I... may I possibly... unless of course you already have... could I borrow it for a tale?

Hmm, maybe even in verse... quatrains, or a brace of sonnets join'd... or just poetic prose...

  34. I really love old prams! It's one of my favorite things when I visit museums and such. Those spoon ears remind me of the little ear scoops that people used, only with the idea the wrong way round! I'd like to see it in colour too, but then I would, wouldn't I? hehe x

  35. I'd have to agree with most of the others, I love it just as it is, if you need to add colour, maybe just a dash on the patchwork quilt.

  36. Rima, wanted to stop by and say hello and thanks for your words.
I love this drawing, I've also made a pram very similar to this, complete with baby, and with tiny quilt! It's a little rickety yet, and unpainted, papier mache gets a little difficult to fashion into wheels, axis etc!
    Beautiful work, so much talent.
